What a Typical Warranty Covers
Most tank water heaters come with a 6 to 12 year warranty on the tank, and a shorter term on parts. Tankless units often carry longer coverage. Generally the warranty covers manufacturing defects, most commonly a tank that fails or leaks within the term. What it usually does not cover is labor, which can be a significant part of a replacement, and normal wear.
Longer-warranty models often include a better anode rod and heavier construction, which is part of why they last longer, not just a paperwork difference.
What Commonly Voids It
This is where homeowners get caught. Warranties are frequently voided by:
- Improper installation. Many manufacturers require professional, code-compliant installation. A DIY or unpermitted install can void coverage.
- No expansion tank. On a closed system, a missing expansion tank can void the warranty because the resulting pressure stress damages the tank.
- Skipped maintenance. Some warranties require periodic flushing or anode rod inspection. No maintenance record can mean no claim.
- Wrong application. Using a residential unit in a commercial setting, or exceeding rated conditions.
- Moving the unit or installing it outside the manufacturer's specifications.
Protect Your Coverage
- Keep your proof of purchase and installation records
- Have it installed by a licensed pro and permitted where required
- Do the recommended maintenance and keep a simple log
- Register the product with the manufacturer if they offer it
When a Claim Makes Sense
If a tank fails within its warranty window, the manufacturer typically provides a replacement unit, but you generally still pay for labor and installation. Knowing this helps you weigh a warranty replacement against upgrading to a better unit.
