If you have a gas water heater, venting is not a detail to overlook. It is a safety system. When it fails, the byproducts of combustion, including carbon monoxide, can end up inside your home instead of outside where they belong.
How Venting Works
A gas water heater burns fuel, and that combustion creates exhaust gases. Venting carries those gases safely out of the house, either up through a flue and roof (atmospheric venting) or out through a sidewall with a fan (power or direct venting). Tankless units typically use sealed direct venting.
For the system to work, it needs the right size, slope, and clear path, plus enough combustion air. Get any of that wrong and gases can spill back into the living space, a condition called backdrafting.
Warning Signs of a Venting Problem
- Soot or scorching around the top of the heater or the draft hood
- A melted or corroded flue pipe
- Condensation or moisture on nearby surfaces
- A persistent gas or exhaust smell near the unit
- Your carbon monoxide detector going off
The Carbon Monoxide Risk
Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless, which is exactly what makes venting problems dangerous. This is why every home with gas appliances should have working CO detectors near sleeping areas, and why venting should be inspected rather than assumed.
Do Not DIY Venting
Venting has to follow code for good reason, and small mistakes have serious consequences. Improper slope, the wrong diameter, or a shared vent that is overloaded can all cause backdrafting. This is one area where professional installation and inspection genuinely matter.
